National Registry EMT Certification & Recertification

Emergency Medical Technicians respond to emergency situations in order to stabilize patients, provide lifesaving interventions, and transport patients to medical facilities.

For those interested in becoming a Nationally Certified Emergency Medical Technician, the following requirements need to be met:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must successfully complete a state-approved EMT course that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards for the Emergency Medical Technician. See more about this on the NREMT website.

  • Must have a current CPR-BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent credential.
  • Must successfully complete the application process provided by NREMT.
  • Must successfully complete a state-approved EMT psychomotor examination, which is an in-person test where proficiency of skills must be demonstrated with an instructor.
  • Must successfully complete the EMT Cognitive Exam, which is a computer adaptive test that covers all aspects of EMS care.

NREMT Recertification
After becoming a National Registry EMT, recertification requirements must be completed prior to the certification expiration date in order to avoid a lapse. One option for recertification is the completion of 72 hours of continuing education, which includes a CAPCE or state-approved 24 Hour Refresher Course as well as CAPCE or state-approved continuing education. For additional details and recertification options, see the NREMT EMT Recertification page. Frequently asked questions about NREMT recertification can also be found here.
