Who Should Take This Course?

This EMS-CE (1-Hour) Diabetic Emergencies, Altered Mental Status, and Allergic Reactions Online course was designed to:

    • help EMTs and Paramedics fulfill their continuing education requirements;
    • provide EMS workers with an understanding of how to treat patients with conditions that can alter mental status, including diabetic emergency or allergic reaction;
    • help EMTs review a specific component of EMT Refresher training.

This course meets the qualification for National, State/Local, or Individual NCCP credit under NREMT distance education.

This course is provided by Safety Unlimited and has been approved for 1 hour of BLS/ALS Instructor Based Continuing Education by C.E. provider 56-0013, CAPCE Provider #SUNI0321.

Course Outline

This course has 2 sections, which are fully narrated and interactive within our Online Training System (OTS). Upon completion of the course, students will need to complete a short evaluation and confirm their identity. Once these steps are completed, the course completion certificate will be available.

Course Exam

  • The final exam for this course consists of 10 questions, which are randomly compiled from a large pool of possible questions.
  • An 80% or better score is needed in order to pass the final exam. If a student does not pass, they may re-review information in the sections as necessary, and retake the test as many times as needed in order to pass.

Course Objective

The objective of this course is to assist currently certified/licensed EMTs or Paramedics fulfill their continuing education requirements and provide EMS workers with an understanding of how to treat patient conditions that can alter mental status, including diabetic emergency or allergic reaction.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify signs of altered mental status and assess altered mental status in patients;
  • Understand symptoms and treat diabetic emergencies;
  • Differentiate between mild allergic reactions and anaphylaxis;
  • Identify when patients should receive an epinephrine auto-injector;
  • and more.
