Match the course to your worker exposure level. 40 Hour for general site workers with significant exposure potential under 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3)(i). 24 Hour for occasional site workers with limited exposure under (e)(3)(ii) or (iii). 16 Hour Upgrade if the worker already holds a current 24 Hour and now needs the full 40 Hour. 32 Hour for the online portion only when the employer provides 8 hours of hands-on separately. 8 Hour Supervisor for site supervisors on top of their worker certification. 8 Hour Refresher every 12 months for everyone already certified. HAZWOPER stands for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. It is the OSHA training standard at 29 CFR 1910.120 (General Industry) and 29 CFR 1926.65 (Construction) that covers workers involved in hazardous waste site cleanup, treatment storage disposal facility operations, and emergency response to releases of hazardous substances.
OSHA requires an 8 Hour HAZWOPER Refresher every 12 months under 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(8) to maintain current training status. The annual refresher can be completed 100% online.
Yes. All online HAZWOPER courses are 100% self-paced. Students log in and out as needed, with progress saved automatically, and have up to 12 months from enrollment to complete the course. Blended courses (40 Hour Online + Classroom and 16 Hour Upgrade Combo) combine the online portion with a scheduled in-person classroom session.
Under OSHA's current penalty schedule (effective January 15, 2026), OSHA can cite employers up to $16,550 per serious violation per worker for HAZWOPER training failures under 29 CFR 1910.120(e), with willful violations multiplying to $165,514 each. Current penalty schedule: osha.gov/penalties.
