Our Company
Why HazMat Student Exists
HazMat Student was founded in 2007 with a straightforward goal: make fully compliant safety training genuinely accessible to the people who need it, and to the employers responsible for them. Compliance shouldn't be confusing, overpriced, or written only for safety professionals.
Nearly two decades later, that mission has grown into a curated catalog of 165+ courses spanning HAZWOPER, OSHA outreach, DOT hazmat, first responder, and EMS training. Our students are laborers, truck drivers, field and site crews, warehouse and environmental workers, and the safety managers and HR teams who train them. Every course is built to meet OSHA, EPA, and DOT standards, and to be understood and applied by the person actually doing the work.
Real-World Expertise
The Experience Behind Our Training
HazMat Student was founded by Rod Zierenberg, who brings direct, real-world experience to the training the company stands behind. Across a 25-year fire service career, Rod rose from certified Hazardous Materials Technician to Hazardous Materials Specialist on the Ventura County Fire Department's Hazardous Incident Response Team (HIRT), where he served roughly two decades, and retired as a Fire Captain. He held EMT licensure throughout his career and responded to thousands of emergency medical calls.
Rod founded HazMat Student in 2007 and built it on that experience: not theory written by marketers, but hazardous-materials, regulatory, and emergency-response knowledge earned in the field.
