National Registry EMT FAQ's

Q. Is this EMT Refresher course CECBEMS approved?

A. Yes. This EMT course is a U.S.DOT (Department of Transportation), 24 hour Online EMT Refresher course. All of our EMS courses are presented by Mark Kommins B.S.E.M.S., Paramedic. Mark has worked as an Emergency Medical Services Provider and Educator since 1990. These EMS training course are State of California approved EMT School as well as a BLS & ALS Continuing Education provider for the National Registry and CECBEMS accredited. Provider # EMSTI0057

How This Course Applies..

1. An individual has attempted and failed the NREMT exam 3 times in any state in the US. They need a 24 hours of Remedial Training to retake the exam.
THIS COURSE COUNTS 100% TO BE ELIGIBLE TO RETAKE THE NATIONAL REGISTRY EXAM 3 MORE TIMES.

2. An individual is currently certified as an EMT in the State of California and would like the 24 hours to renew.
THIS COURSE COUNTS 100% FOR EMT RENEWAL THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA. IN ADDITION, THE PERSON WILL NEED A VALID CPR CARD AND EMT SKILLS TESTING.

3. An individual was certified with the NREMT but their certificate has expired.

If it has been expired for longer than the 2 year grace period, they will need to retake the entire EMT course, unless they have maintained a State EMT card anywhere in the US. Or If their NREMT certificate expired less than 2 years ago or more than 2 years ago and they have maintained a State EMT card...

Q. I have a valid NREMT card that has not yet expired. What does the NREMT require for recertification?

In applying for recertification, certified EMS professionals agree to comply with all recertification requirements, rules and standards of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). The recertification applicant bears the burden of demonstrating and maintaining compliance at all times.

A. EMT- Basic Recertification

In applying for recertification, certified EMS professionals agree to comply with all recertification requirements, rules and standards of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). The recertification applicant bears the burden of demonstrating and maintaining compliance at all times.

To Apply For Recertification You Must:

  1. Be actively working within an emergency medical service, rescue service, or patient health care facility using your EMT-Basic skills.
  2. Complete all educational requirements prior to March 31.
  3. Complete the recertification report in its entirety and submit the completed report prior to March 31.
  4. Demonstrate continued cognitive (knowledge) competency through continuing education or examination. Continuing Education Option Complete a total of 72 hours of education including:
    • Completion of an approved 24 hour DOT National Standard EMT-Basic Refresher. Sign Up
    • Completion of 48 hours of additional continuing EMS related education as outlined below
    • Pay the $15.00 (US funds only) recertification application fee at the time of submission of documentation

Exam Option

Certified EMS professionals may make one attempt to demonstrate continued cognitive competency by taking an examination (in lieu of documenting continuing education) within six months of their expiration date (October 1 through March 31).

Log in to the NREMT website and complete an application for recertification by examination.

Pay the $70 examination fee prior to scheduling the exam.

  1. Detailed Continuing Education Requirements

    Complete an approved EMT-Basic Refresher The EMT-Basic refresher course can be completed through two different options:

    1. Traditional refresher course - an approved DOT National Standard EMT-Basic Refresher. Sign Up
    2. Continuing education topical hours* - refresher may be completed by continuing education and must include the topics and hours listed below:
      • Topics

        OB, Infants, Children 2 hours
        Patient Assessment 3 hours
        Medical/Behavior 4 hours
        Trauma 4 hours
        Elective 8 hour
        Total 24 hours

      * Some states require the traditional refresher course and will not accept continuing education hours. Please refer to your state’s particular requirements. ** A maximum number of 10 hours CECBEMS approved Distrubutive Education can be applied to refresher education. Because our 24 hour EMT Refresher Course is INSTRUCTOR BASED, and CECBEMS accredited, the entire 24 Online Hours are accepted by the NREMT. See more about our F2#.

      Additional EMS Related Continuing Education-48 hours
    The following are maximum hours per course that can be applied towards Additional Continuing Education hours:
    A maximum number of 24 hours can be applied from any one topic area

    A maximum of 16 hours can be applied from each of the following courses:

      • ABLS, AMLS, BTLS, NALS, PEPP, PHTLS, PPC

      A maximum number of 12 hours can be applied from each of the following courses:

      • Teaching CPR, Emergency Driving, Dispatch Training

      A maximum number of 24 hours of CECBEMS approved Distributive Education can be applied to continuing education requirements. Click here for CE courses.

    College Courses

    A maximum of 24 hours can be applied towards additional continuing education hours from the college level courses related to EMS. These courses include but are not limited to: Anatomy/Physiology, Pharmacology, Cellular Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Microbiology

    Hours from the following courses can be applied hour for hour with no maximum: Advanced Trauma Life Support, Refresher Course Instruction, and Wilderness EMS Training.

    Courses that Can Not Be Applied Towards Continuing Education Hours: Clinical Rotations, CPR, Home Study Programs, Instructor Courses, Management/Leadership Courses, Performance of Duty, Preceptor Hours, Serving as a skill examination, and Volunteer time with agencies.

Q. I failed the NREMT exam 3 times and need a 24-hour EMT refresher course. Does this course qualify?
A. Our 24 Hour NREMT Refresher meets the requirements to enable you to retake the NREMT exam 3 more times.

Q. I was certified as an NREMT but my card has been expired for less than 2 years. Can I take this course? Lapsed Certification

A. If your National EMS Certification lapsed as an EMT-Basic within a two year period or you are currently state licensed as an EMT-Basic, you can obtain National EMS Certification by completing a state-approved Refresher course and successfully completing the cognitive and psychomotor examinations. If your EMS certification expired more than two years ago, you must complete an entire state-approved EMT-Basic course and complete the cognitive and psychomotor examinations.
This course meets the NREMT requirements to allow you take the NREMT exam again and revalidate your NREMT card.
Note: You will also need a valid CPR card and Skills Testing.

Q. My NREMT has been expired for longer than two years? Does this refresher qualify for me to renew.
A. No. You must retake the entire EMT course over unless you have maintained a state EMT card anywhere in the US.

Q. I took an EMT course and am currently working as an EMT-B but do not have a certificate from the National Registry. What do I need to do to get my NREMT Certificate?
A. You must start an application with the National Registry, take a 24 hour EMT Refresher, perform Skills Testing and take the NREMT Exam.

Q. When will I receive my certificate for the 24 Hour EMT Refresher?
A. Once you have completed the course, we will mail out your certificate of completion within 2 to 3 business days.  Then you need to complete the renewal process set forth by your County, State, or the National Registry. The application process may include, CE (continuing education), skills testing, a valid CPR card, fees, etc.

Q. I am currently certified as an EMT in the state of California and need to take a 24 hour EMT Refresher to renew my certificate before it expires. Does this course qualify?
A. YES! Our 24 Hour EMT Refresher meets the requirements for EMT renewal in all counties throughout California.
