What is 40 Hour HAZWOPER training?

OSHA’s HAZWOPER standard requires employees who will work on uncontrolled hazardous waste operations to complete HAZWOPER training before they begin work on these job sites. Employees will initially need either 24-Hour or 40-Hour HAZWOPER training depending on their job duties and potential interaction with hazardous substances. After the initial training is completed, annual refresher training is required. Supervisors of employees requiring 40-Hour HAZWOPER training will also need to complete the 40 Hour course, as well as HAZWOPER Supervisor training and annual refresher training.

Does 40 Hour HAZWOPER expire?

40 Hour HAZWOPER certification expires after 12 months. Workers are required to take annual refresher training in order to maintain their HAZWOPER certification. If the training has expired or lapsed, the employer will need to determine whether the employee needs to repeat the initial 40 Hour training or whether a HAZWOPER Refresher will be sufficient for the employee to renew their certification and safely perform their job duties.
