OSHA HAZWOPER Training by State

The Occupational Safety and Health Act covers most private and some public sector workers in the 50 states and some jurisdictions. Under the approval and monitoring of OSHA, twenty-six states have developed and operate their own safety and health standards. These OSHA approved State Plans are required to be “at least as effective” as the Federal OSHA standards. The OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response HAZWOPER standard (1910.120 and 1926.65) provides training requirements for five distinct groups of employers and their employees, who are exposed or potentially exposed to hazardous substances or hazardous waste. Many of the State Plans have adopted HAZWOPER standards identical to the Federal OSHA regulations. Where differences do apply, the State Plan HAZWOPER training requirements must be at least as stringent as the Federal OSHA requirements.

HazMat Student offers HAZWOPER training online and in the classroom to help students meet the training requirements found in Federal OSHA HAZWOPER regulations. In Plan States with requirements beyond the Federal level, many students opt to complete the OSHA HAZWOPER training online and supplement their training with state-specific needs. Click on a state below to see if your state follows the Federal OSHA HAZWOPER standard or whether state-specific differences apply. For the most current information on differences, see OSHA’s State Plans page.
