About This Course

Our 8-Hour Hazmat First Responder Awareness (FRA) Training Classroom course is designed for firefighters, police officers, ambulance personnel, private industry emergency responders, military personnel, and government employees.

First Responders at the Awareness level are required to be trained in accordance with section (q) of the HAZWOPER regulation. Annual refresher training of sufficient content and duration to maintain responder competencies is also required.

Per 1910.120(q)(6)(i):

“First responder awareness level. First responders at the awareness level are individuals who are likely to witness or discover a hazardous substance release and who have been trained to initiate an emergency response sequence by notifying the proper authorities of the release. They would take no further action beyond notifying the authorities of the release. First responders at the awareness level shall have sufficient training or have had sufficient experience to objectively demonstrate competency in the following areas:”

This course complies with the First Responders Awareness training requirements under Fed-OSHA, Cal-OSHA, and NFPA 472.

Course Format & Length

This Hazardous Materials for First Responders course is taught by a CSTI certified outreach instructor and includes up-to-date, high quality training created with your safety and learning as our top priority.

This course is offered at our facilities. You can enroll in this course through open enrollment. View classroom training schedule.

We can also provide this FRA training on-site at your location when hosted by your employer. Request a quote for onsite training.

We also offer a 100% Online OSHA compliant 4-hour HAZMAT FRA course, however, this courses doesn’t come with a CSTI/Cal OES certificate:

Course Topics

The CSTI 8-Hour First Responder Awareness (FRA) classroom course will cover the following training topics:

  • Hazardous Materials Recognition and Safety
  • Safety, Isolation, and Notifications
  • Introduction to Incident Command
  • Identification, Hazard Assessment, and Action Planning

Certification

This First Responder course is taught by a CSTI certified outreach instructor. Once the course is completed successfully, you will be given access to download, save or print a temporary Course Completion Certificate which is provided in PDF format. You will also be issued a state certificate from California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI)/Cal OES.

The final certificate takes up to 3 weeks for delivery. Training certification will be granted under California Government Code Section 8574.19-23 and California Code of Regulations Title 19, Sections 2510-2560
